Pick a palette, not an outfit

Choose two or three colors that live well together and build everyone around them. Soft neutrals photograph like butter. Earth tones love the natural light all over the Sacramento Valley. Dress for the place

Linen, knit, suede, a little flow in a skirt or a dress. Texture reads beautifully on camera and adds depth without you lifting a finger. Big logos and busy graphics fight for attention and pull the eye off your face. For engagement and couples photos especially, let your expression be the loudest thing in the frame.

Booking professional headshots or personal brand photos? Keep it simple and modern. Solid colors, clean necklines, nothing that dates fast. You want the shot to still work on your website and LinkedIn two years from now.

Bring options, not pressure

Pack a second look if you can. A jacket on, a jacket off. It costs nothing and it doubles the range of your gallery. You will be glad to have it the moment the light shifts.

A few things to skip

• Brand-new shoes you have not walked in yet. Comfort shows.
